Library of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens: Digital Repository Platform and related online services

This project included the creation of a single platform of the Institutional Repository / Digital Library, for the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, its digital enrichment with digitized library material and the training of the library staff. This platform, called Pergamos, and Uni Systems digitized and stored more than 900.000 pages of serials, books, loose leaf papers, manuscripts, theses, etc. The digitization was implemented with the state-of-the-art robotic scanners by our team with years of experience in their operation.

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), officially founded in April 14th, 1837, is the first University not only of Greece but both the Balkan Peninsula and the Eastern Mediterranean region. The NKUA’s Library Directorate was legislated in October, 1998, while in October 2005 a Unified Central Library was founded as an independent and decentralized Directorate Unit, under the name of "Library and Information Center (LIC)". Its line of work comprises the functional coordination of the University's Libraries. Specifically, the Library Directorate consists of the eight Libraries of the University's Schools plus the Libraries Computer Center.

Need

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens needed to preserve the rare and research-intensive material over time and has, therefore, decided to undertake the digitization of selected material and store it on a new platform that is easily accessible to its users. 

Solution

Uni Systems provided digitization services by using robotic scanners and created an open repository where all the content was available in digital form.

After the implementation of this project, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens has the ability to offer a new service to its users by giving them access to rare and research-intensive material using any device that is connected to the internet, anywhere and anytime, with safety. A scanned document is a trackable document. If needed, only certain users can access the documents, maintaining its confidentiality.
